Burnaby’s Dageraad Brewing took home the top honours at the Canadian Brewing Awards in Halifax tonight (May 26), winning the coveted Brewery of the Year award, as well as a slew of gold medals.
Breweries from across Canada took part in the 16th annual beer competition, with B.C. breweries winning a total of 51 medals across 55 style categories, including 18 golds. Dageraad won a trio of gold medals for Antwerpen (Belgian-Style Tripel), Burnabarian (Belgian-Style Abbey Ale/Pale Ale) and Entropy No. 6 (Belgian-Style Brett Beer), helping to secure it the title of Brewery of the Year.
“We’ve always tried to give our drinkers the very best beer we can manage to make, but it’s incredible to get this kind of recognition,” the brewery stated on its Facebook page. “Thanks to everyone who helped keep us in business these last four years. As soon as we’re done celebrating we’re going to get back to work to keep earning this.”
Dageraad is the third B.C. brewery to take the top prize in the past four years, joining Mt. Begbie Brewing (2017) and Four Winds Brewing Co. (2015).
Four Winds had four medals to its credit this year, winning silver for La Maison Wild Saison (Session Ale) and three bronzes for Triplicity (Belgian-Style Tripel), Pomona Stone Fruit Sour Ale (Belgian-Style Sour Ale/Fruit Lambic) and Nectarous Dry-Hopped Sour (American-Style Sour Ale).
A number of small town breweries proved they could hang with the big kids in the city, most notably tiny Mayne Island Brewing Co., which picked up a silver medal for its Barrel Aged Brown (Wood and Barrel-Aged Beer/Dark Beer). Golden’s Whitetooth Brewing won gold for Truth, Dare, Consequence (Imperial Stout) and bronze for its Session Ale (North American Style Blonde or Golden Ale). All three Gibsons breweries won medals (Persephone Brewing, Gibsons Tapworks and The 101 Brewhouse and Distillery), as did Sooke Oceanside Brewery and Sooke Brewing Company.
