Here’s what we’re fattening ourselves up with for the winter this week…
Carolina / Ottavia by Luppolo Brewing
Uva birra • 500 mL bottles (x2) • 7.0 % ABV
These two beers were named after the twin daughters of Luppolo Brewing co-owners Anique Ross and Federico Stucchi and are only sold together (since twins are inseparable, after all). , are complex and playful beers that brings together grain and grape in a nod to the Italian Grape Ale style. Both beers are interpretations of the Italian uva birra (grape ale) style, using the same base beers, but blended in different proportions. Borrowing techniques from winemaking, the beers feature a mixed-culture barrel-aged golden ale with Pinot Noir grapes. According to the brewery, Carolina is a blush-hued beer that has a vinous and spice aroma, followed by flavours of pear, rose petal and citrus. Ottavia is a ruby-hued beer that has fruit-forward aromas of ripe red berries, followed by flavours of raisin and pepper with a vinous finish. Both beers are available at Luppolo’s East Vancouver tasting room for a limited time only.
