Vancouver’s got a new Halloween beer event this year with ‘monster burlesque’

It’s not just a beer fest…

First, there was the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and now there’s the Hoppy Horror Beer Show.

Coming to the Croatian Cultural Centre on Oct. 21, the new twist on a beer festival promises plenty of ales and lagers to try, along with a fun night of Halloween-themed entertainment.

“It’s a Halloween party with monster burlesque and beverages,” says organizer Mike Willis (who recently put on the Fruit Beer Festival). “It’s a place to not worry, let loose, dress up and watch a show.”

Unlike most beer festivals these days, this one won’t have a token system. Instead, it’s a one-time payment upfront, as part of the ticket to get in. Along with unique beers, he’s also got meads, ciders, and non-alcoholic beverages lined up. But he’s making sure it’s not a typical beer festival at the same time.

Notably, the entertainment will be unusual, with a monster burlesque show put on by local troop the Geekenders, meaning the likes of Frankenstein and Dracula will be on stage. There’s also going to be a live band playing 60s-style surf rock.

There will also be a small marketplace with local makers, including handcrafted tabletop dice, jewellery, and a leather maker.

Willis is also encouraging people to dress up for the event, though it’s not a requirement.

He’s hoping that if things go well it can be an annual event with bigger, theatrical entertainment.

Tickets are on sale now with a capacity of 500 for the event.
