On tap! New beers from Four Winds, Faculty and Category 12

Here’s what we’re looking forward to tossing down our gullet this week!

Four Winds' Edna crabapple and cranberry sour ale.
Four Winds’ Edna crabapple and cranberry sour ale.

Edna by Four Winds Brewing (6.5% ABV, 750 mL bottles)

Edna was Four Winds’ first ever brewery-only limited release way back in 2015, resulting in a lineup down the block from the tasting room and selling out in one day. They’ve decided to bring Edna back for 2019, this time making it available to purchase in liquor stores across the province in 750 mL bottles.

Much like her Simpsons namesake, Edna is a crabapple sour, but with cranberry and aged in oak foeders for over a year, instead of cigarettes and regret. According to Four Winds, it features subtle notes of tart cranberry complement its nuanced tannic apple character, producing a balanced sour ale which will continue to develop with age.

Edna will be available in select taps and liquor stores across the province, as well as at the brewery itself.

Category 12's Rhubarb Sour.

Rhubarb Sour by Category 12 Brewing (650 mL bottles)

The latest release in Category 12’s Elemental Series is this tart golden ale fermented on rhubarb. Here’s what they have to say about it:

“The rhubarb imparts gentle flavour and subtle hue to this wildly approachable ale. Like all of the sours we like to make, you’ll find this a delectable, refreshing palate cleanser that’s sure to win new fans to the “dark” side of innovative beer making.”

Rhubarb Sour will only be available at the brewery and few select liquor stores, so if you see one, you better pounce on that.

689 Coffee Porter by Faculty Brewing (5.5% ABV, 650 mL bottles)

Faculty’s first batch of 689 Coffee Porter went so fast, they decided to give this winter seasonal another go—so get it while it lasts.

“This porter boasts toasted malt flavours, perfectly complemented by the addition of one of Milano Roasters’ premier Black Series coffees, Black Beauty. Get ready for rich notes of cocoa, caramel, and toffee.”
