Brews News: Milk growlers; Spinnakers gets sour; Tacofino teams with local breweries

Growler fills at your local… dairy?

We’re all used to filling up our growlers with delicious, local craft beer, but one dairy on Vancouver Island wants to fill them with milk!

Morningstar Farm in Parksville is the first dairy in B.C., and possibly Canada, to offer a growler-fill station for milk.

Spinnakers’ launches new barrel-aged sours

Victoria’s legendary Spinnakers Brewpub is celebrating the launch of its Brewers Reserve program with a Winter Harvest launch party on Jan. 20. Spinnakers will be releasing two new barrel-aged sours, as well as some favourites from the brewpub’s cellar alongside some of the best barrel-aged beers from across the province.

The event gets started at 3pm on Jan. 20, and is open to the public with no tickets needed.

Tacofino teams up with local craft breweries

West Coast tacosmith Tacofino is partnering with nine B.C. craft breweries to host a monthly series of five-course beer dinners at its Hastings-Sunrise location (2327 E. Hastings St.) beginning January 25 and continuing throughout the spring and summer.

“We’re big fans of the awesome breweries we have in B.C. and this beer dinner series is our way of showing our support of Vancouver’s beer culture,” said Matt Fidler, general manager at Tacofino Hastings, in a press release. “We can’t wait to showcase some of these local labels at our Hastings location, where we’re surrounded by incredible breweries.”

Executive chef Stefan Hartmann and head chef James You are crating a custom, five-course menu of eclectic, Baja-by-way-of-West Coast cuisine in collaboration with a different featured brewery each night. The series kicks off Jan. 25 with Red Truck Beer Company, followed by Tofino Brewing Company (Feb. 22), Steel & Oak Brewing Co. (March 29), Strange Fellows Brewing Company (April 26), Four Winds Brewing Co. (May 31) and Port Moody Brewers Row (The Parkside Brewery, Moody Ales, Yellow Dog Brewing Co. and Twin Sails Brewing) on June 28.

Tickets to each dinner — which features two seatings at 6 and 8:30 p.m. — are available for $50 per person (inclusive of tax, gratuity and ticketing fees) and are available online at Eventbrite.ca.
