Fernie Brewing’s new tasting room opens

After a three-month closure, Fernie Brewing’s tasting room reopened this week, much to the relief of many a-thirsty Fernian (Fernite? Fern?)

With the new extended bar, Fernie’s tasting room now offers up to 12 beers on tap, rotating through core beers, seasonals and limited-release brews. The newly renovated space offers additional seating and standing room, while the popular patio is set to reopen in coming weeks.

In addition to the expanded tasting room and storefront, the renovation also makes room for more warehouse space, a new tank farm and additional office space.

Despite the beautiful new space, several features of the tasting room remain the same, including FBC’s Cheers to Charity Program. At just $5 for a flight of four samples, all profits go to a local charity, organization or club rotating every six to eight weeks.

The new hours for the tasting room are Monday–Thursday, 10am-7pm; Friday and Saturday 10am-8pm; and Sunday, 12pm-6pm

Kettle River turns one!

Arguably the hardest working craft brewery in B.C., Kelowna’s Kettle River Brewing is celebrating its first birthday with a special barrel-aged beer that’s as old as they are.

This Sunday, the brewery will be tapping into two barrels of oak-aged light ale, that have been split and refermented in three different tanks; one with rhubarb, one with Saskatoon berries and one with gooseberries.

“The beer went into the barrel just before our opening last year,” says Kettle River co-owner Chris Dedinsky. “Before refermenting with the various fruits this year, it had a very floral and vanilla nose with heavy white oak flavor and finished very crisp and dry.”

Dedinsky says the brewery will be offering samples of the beer to celebrate their birthday, and hopes to bottle it, “whenever our change in licensing finally happens.”

Kettle River’s lounge endorsement and licensed patio area application was approved by Kelowna city council a few weeks ago and the final approval is expected any day now.

Keep on Truckin’

The latest installment in the Red Truck Beer Truck Stop Concert Series takes place this Saturday, July 15, in the parking lot of their Vancouver brewery, near Main and Second Avenue.

This weekend’s concert has a decidedly country vibe, with Drake White and the Big Fire headlining. Also on the bill are the Dungarees, the Chris Buck Band, Kristin Bunyan, Sykamore and Drew Gregory. Tickets available here.
