33 Acres of Cid3r

Vancouver’s 33 Acres Brewing is celebrating three years in business with their first barrel-aged release. Here’s the twist, though – it’s not even beer!

33 Acres of Cid3r is a dry tart cider aged in a French oak Chardonnay barrel with cranberries for 13 months, then bottle-conditioned to create the perfect champagne-like bubbly treat to toast three years of delicious existence.

33 Acres released 200 limited-edition bottles just before Christmas and those sold out pretty much instantly. But we’re in luck! They will be doing a second (and final) release of 33 Acres of Cid3r in the new year. Keep your eyes peeled, though, they’ll no doubt be going fast.

Doan’s Craft Brewing + Moody Ales Rye Munich Dunkel

We here at The Growler love a good collab brew, so we’re pretty excited about this one. Vancouver’s Doan’s Craft Brewing and Port Moody’s Moody Ales have teamed up to create a Rye Munich Dunkel.

Both breweries share a common love of rye beers. Rye adds an interesting spiciness to a beer that we just can’t get enough of. They’ve taken the classic Munich Dunkel and added malted and flaked rye to create a refreshing, malty, spicy winter lager.

In addition to rye, the grain bill also includes Pilsner, Crystal 60, and Munich Light malts, while the hops (at a modest 20 IBU) are strictly Old World, with Hallertau Hersbrucker and Spalt getting the job done.

We haven’t tried this one yet, but it promises to offer “hints of caramel, chocolate, coffee and a punch of rye.” Rye Munich Dunkel weighs in at 5.5% ABV, and is available in 650mL bottles through the breweries’ tasting rooms.

Cannery Brewing Kindling Breakfast Stout

Penticton’s Cannery Brewing joined forces with Red Beard Café in Kamloops to create its latest addition to its Artisan Creation Series.

Kindling Breakfast Stout pairs Red Beard’s coffee with bittersweet chocolate and oats for a dark, rich way to start the day.

This beer is sure to warm you up on cold winter mornings at 8.0% ABV, and at 60 IBUs, it’s healthily hopped.

The Brazilian coffee used in the beer was roasted “just a little longer than normal to bring out flavours of caramel and extra body to enhance its presence in this breakfast stout,” according to Red Beard owner Edna Forgie.

Kindling Breakfast Stout is available in 650ml bottles throughout B.C. and Alberta.
